Sudanese protesters march, demand transitional deal

24 May 2019

Sudanese doctors, engineers, and artists marched to join a sit-in camp on Thursday, demanding a swift transitional deal. The Transitional Military Council, Sudan's main opposition and protest groups have been locked in talks over a new sovereign body to oversee a three-year transition to democracy.

Talks were adjourned in the early hours of Tuesday, with no new date set for their resumption. On Wednesday, the military said it wants to hand power to a democratically elected government as soon as possible, a prominent general said in an interview. On Tuesday, Sudan's main protest group - the Sudanese Professionals Association - called for a general strike, saying the military was still insisting on directing the transition and keeping a military majority on the council.
