Spain says 14 wildfires still active, hopeful of improvements

Just over a dozen wildfires are still burning in Spain, with 12 classified as serious with a danger to people and property, with more favorable conditions expected to help firefighters stabilize the blazes, Spain's civil protection service chief said.

"They are confident that the firefighting teams, as they did Wednesday, will consolidate all these improvements, allowing them to definitively put an end to this dramatic episode in history," said Virginia Barcones, director of Civil Protection and Emergencies. Spanish firefighters, helped by teams from other EU countries, have been battling blazes for weeks that have scorched more than 350,000 hectares.
