The government of South Korea set up a public-private joint team and launched an investigation into a massive data leak at Coupang, Korea’s largest e-commerce firm. As personal information was leaked from 33.7 million customer accounts, the government is looking into it in a two-prong investigation separate from one by the Korea Personal Information Protection Commission.

Based on reports from the online retailer, police suspect that a former Coupang employee of Chinese nationality is behind the data hack. Circumstantial evidence has been found that the former employee accessed customers’ personal information via an overseas server since June.
