Soft-shell Crab Farming: Breeders operate business on 431.15 acres in Labutta

Starting from 2015, soft-shell crab farming has been operated in Labutta District of Ayeyawaddy Region and currently, there are 9 soft-shell crab breeders with 431. 15 acres. Soft-shell crabs are mainly exported to China, Europe, Thailand, Malaysia and Australia and about 309.22 tons of soft-shell crab have been exported during the current period of  2022-2023 FY.

War War Thein, Head, Department of Fisheries (Labutta District) said "There are 9 soft-shell crab breeders with 3 companies and 6 business owners with manageable scale. There are cold storage factories at the 3 companies and these factories make finished product processing from the raw materials of soft-shell crabs to export to the cold storage factories in Yangon and then, exported to other countries. Our department also carries outworks process of crab species adding to the farming acres for long term sustainability."

The department also conducts awareness to the businessmen to export crabs through GAP system. Soft-shell crab breeding in Labutta District also creates more job opportunities for locals.
