Social Pension Provision: 20.281 Billion kyats provided to elders aged 85 & above

In the third quarter of 2022-2023 FY, 20.281 billion kyats of social pensions were provided to elders aged 85 and above.

In Myanmar, the Department of Social Welfare under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement started  providing social pensions to the elderly people aged 90 and  above in 2017 -2018 financial year. Starting from 2018-2019 financial year, social pensions were provided to the elders aged 85 and above. 

Director General, Department of Social Welfare, Dr San San  Aye, said " In 2022-2023 budget year, we will provide pensions three times instead of four times a year. We have already provided pensions for the first two times. Third time provision began on 1st February and we have been conducting to provide 206,887 elders with allotted budgets 20.281 billion kyats.The National Social Protection Strategic Plan was conducted in every country. In Myanmar, the social pension was already identified as one of the state's eight flagship programmes in the National Social Protection Strategic Plan which was drafted in 2014."

According to the official of Department of Social Welfare, pensions to the elderly people above 90 years old have been started to provide in 2017-2018 FY. In 2018-2019 FY, the age limit has been reduced to 85 year and above. The social pension was already identified as one of the state's eight flagship programmes in the National Social Protection Strategic Plan in 2014.Over 200,000 elders aged 85 and above have been provided pensions in the 2022-2023 FY.
