

A group of panelists sat to talk about fundamental freedoms that are essential for democracy at American Center in Yangon on the 25th of November.
The discussion is named as the “First Amendment Series: Exploring Freedoms in a Democracy” as it shares the experiences of what the United States is practicing the basic rights and freedoms.
The American Ambassador to Myanmar explained on the first amendment of the United States constitution that guarantees five freedoms; freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of assembly and right to petition the government.

U.S. Embassy, H.E. Scot Marciel said “These freedoms are universal. There in universal declaration of human rights that is appropriate for all culture. But every culture is different also, and so the way that people develop these freedoms and practices might be a little bit different in each country. So that’s why in this program we are not saying that Myanmar should do exactly what the United States does. We are sharing our experiences but also inviting Myanmar people to talk about what makes sense for Myanmar”.
The Ambassador added that progress has been seen in freedom of expression in Myanmar compared to a decade ago, and also pointed out the needs to continue the progress.

Scot Marciel said “I think there’s been a lot of progress, there’s been much more freedom of expression now freedom of the press in otherwise certainly ten years ago but I think most people are agree that there’re still quite a few restrictions. So our hope is that is Myanmar continues to debate this issue. It will be possible for people to enjoy even more freedom”.
The panelists U Htein Win, Hline Thit Zin Wai, Nay Phone Latt and Cheery Zahau discussed the matters on freedoms of press and expression that Myanmar is facing.
