Five children and two adults have died in mudslides in Kyrgyzstan, the government said on Saturday. At least 1,300 people on holiday have been evacuated since Friday evening. Central Asia regularly suffers floods, earthquakes, landslides, avalanches and fires.

But rising temperatures are leading to more frequent and intense droughts, natural disasters and unpredictable seasonal weather condition in Kyrgyzstan, according to the United Nations. The government announced in late June an 86 percent increase in mudslides between March and July 2024 compared with the same period last year.
