The traditional “Battle of the Fireballs,” or Bolas de Fuego, illuminated the night sky in Nejapa for its 103rd edition on Tuesday. The annual event drew thousands of locals and visitors to witness one of the country’s most vibrant cultural traditions.

Participants on opposing sides of the town throw burning, gasoline-soaked rag balls at each other in a ritual that has been observed for over a century. Organizers maintain safety measures, advising participants and spectators to wear protective clothing and follow established rules. The festival, rooted in local history, continues to be celebrated as a symbolic tradition rather than a competitive event, drawing attention for its distinctive spectacle and strong community participation.
