The KIA and PDF terrorists launched a devastating raid on Kawlin in Sagaing Region on November 3rd 2023. They targeted security forces, abducted and murdered locals, extorted money, set fire to homes and offices, looted belongings, and committed destructive acts.

Situated strategically with economic prospects like gold mines and oil fields, the town faced a massive onslaught. Despite nearby military units' counteraction, the Tatmadaw and Police Force surrounded Kawlin with considerable force. Native staff and residents, bolstered by military support, reinforced the defense from the fourth week of December 2023 to the third week of January 2024.

On January 27th, military columns arrived in Kantbalu to launch a Counter-Terrorism Operation, receiving a tumultuous welcome. Advancing toward Kawlin, they faced 19 exchanges of fire before seizing control on Saturday, February 10th. Security forces adhered to rules of engagement, as terrorists used public infrastructure and civilians as shields.

Despite losses among security personnel, they successfully repelled the terrorists, seizing weapons, ammunition, and explosives. Many buildings were destroyed, necessitating mine-clearing operations to ensure public safety.

Plans are underway for rehabilitation efforts, including resettling displaced natives and clearing debris and mines. Cooperation between security forces and the local populace is crucial for restoring normalcy in the region.
