Following a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake on March 28, severe damage occurred to religious sites, government buildings, homes and infrastructure in Sagaing Township.
On March 29, Chief Minister U Myat Kyaw inspected the affected areas where the rescue operations are underway by Tatmadaw members, Myanmar Police Force, firefighters, and social organizations.
Among the damages include Swan Oo Ponnya Shin Pagoda, with the collapse of Buddha image, a three-story refectory hall and Sakya Dhita Nunnery.
Resident said "There were 10 people trapped inside the building. Five escaped and some under the debris were rescued. The operation ended around midnight, saving three, but two, including my wife, are still trapped and haven’t been rescued yet."
During the tour, the Chief Minister oversaw rescue operations and offered words of encouragement to the families of the deceased and missing persons.
Resident said "It happened on Friday during Ramadan, with around 350 people in the mosque. The earthquake struck powerfully, causing the entire building to collapse. Fortunately, those outside were safe, but about 100 people inside were trapped. Rescue operations have been ongoing since then. Rescue teams from Shwe Bo, Pyin Oo Lwin, Mandalay, the Myanmar Police Force, Fire Brigade members and other governmental organizations have joined the effort. Sadly, there have been many fatalities, especially at Moja, Myoma, and MyoDaw mosques. It was heartbreaking. Our own rescue efforts aren’t enough and even our homes have been damaged. We’re very thankful for the help from all the assisting organizations."
Volunteer said "The KG kids and teachers were trapped in the center and we immediately began rescue operations. We broke through two collapsed rooms but have not yet found them. We're now working on the third room where we believe they might be trapped. With the combined efforts of the Myanmar Police Force, Thanlyin Fire Brigade, and Parahita organizations, we’ve been doing everything possible to save them. While rescue operations continue across the township, unfortunately, some have not yet been rescued but we remain focused and continue working tirelessly."
The recent earthquake caused widespread damages, including the collapse of residential homes, shops, basic education schools, roads, and the Yadanapon approach road and Ayeyarwaddy Crossing Bridge (Innwa). The injured personnel were sent to the Sagaing People’s Hospital for medical treatment.
