Russians evacuate from Iran across the Iran-Azerbaijan border

As of June 16, a significant evacuation of Russian citizens from Iran is underway, facilitated by Azerbaijan. This movement is primarily in response to the escalating Israel-Iran conflict. The primary route for evacuees is the Astara border crossing between Iran and Azerbaijan.

Russian nationals, including artists and film crew members, have been crossing into Azerbaijan in groups. The Azerbaijani government has provided buses to transport evacuees to Heydar Aliyev International Airport for onward travel. The evacuation is part of a broader exodus from Tehran, where over 100,000 residents have fled due to Israeli airstrikes targeting military and nuclear sites.
