Consecutive heavy rains in Kachin State have triggered inundation across several townships, causing the erosion of the Ayeyawady River banks with significant damage to residential houses.
Chief Minister U KhetHtein Nan visited Mainar Village in Waimaw Township on Wednesday, where erosion had damaged houses and a pagoda. During his visit, the Chief Minister met with affected victims and provided rice, noodles, and relief items to 18 households impacted by the disaster.
This year, Kachin State has experienced its worst flood on record, attributed to surges in both the Maykha and Malikha Rivers, resulting in water levels reaching 206 centimeters above the danger level. Similar record floods occurred previously in 1979 and 2004. In response to these challenges, plans are now underway to construct a 4,000-foot-long embankment along the riverbank aimed at preventing future disasters.
