The return of El Nino threatens wildlife in Galapagos Islands

The El Nino climate phenomenon is back, and is expected to put wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, located roughly 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, at risk with rising sea temperatures that leave marine animals without food, and heavy rains can cause floods in nesting areas of land tortoises.

The phenomenon occurs on average every two to seven years, and episodes typically last nine to 12 months.
