Resettlement in Kachin State: Assistance provided for resettlement of IDPs

Kachin State Government is making efforts for resettlement of the displaced persons and closing of IDP camps within Kachin State by cooperating with respective organizations. According to the Work Coordination Meeting of the township level committee members which was held at the State Government office on 6th June, four IDP camps have been closed in Kachin State and 712 households with 3,838 people were resettled from April to 5th June of 2023-2024.

At the meeting, State Chief Minister U Khet Htain Nan said that due to the efforts of the committee members, the displaced persons from IDP camps were able to resettle at their original places and rehabilitated housings. Moreover, basic needs of the families such as education and health matters were also coordinated and fulfilled.

The State Chief Minister also urged to cooperate with each other to be able to close IDP camps and carry out resettlement activities in 2023.  Next, the chairmen of the district administration council reported on the matters related to the households living in the IDP camps from armed conflicts, resettlement of households to their original places and land issues.

Township level committee members, religious leaders and officials from PCG and ICRC also made reports on the respective sectors. In his response to the reports, the State Chief Minister coordinated on the needs. Similarly, the State Chief Minister met and encouraged the households from 4 IDP camps in Myitkyina Township who will be resettled to their original places.

After that, the State Chief Minister and officials provided one bag of rice, one viss of cooking oil for each household and cash assistance for all households amounted over 1.8 million kyats and State Disaster Management Department provided rice provision, cash assistance of 100,000 kyats each for moving expences, relief aids and over 4.4 million kyats for 21 households with 128 people.
