Research Symposium: Efforts for multiparty democratic general election

A research symposium for successful holding of multiparty democratic general election was conducted at Yangon Region Government Office on Friday morning. It was attended by Chairman of the Union Election Commission (UEC) U Thein Soe and the representatives from registered political parties.
Speaking on the occassion, the UEC Chairman said that there are a total of 65 political parties applied for re-registration and new registration, according to the newly enacted Political Parties Registration Law.
Among these parties, 47 parties have been granted registration and 45 out of them have been existed due to the dissolution of 2 political parties. He emphasized the need for political parties to organize for meeting the specified party membership and opening the specified number of party offices within set period in accordance with the Political Parties Registration Law and by-laws. He reiterated that those reached 90-day period from the registration, only 28 out of 35 political parties have reached the targeted party membership.
For opening the party offices, only 19 out of 32 political parties have opened the specified party offices within 180 days. He stressed that the Union Election Commission is actively working for the successful holding of the election. Then, the responsible persons from the political parties gave brief report on the successful holding of the general election. And, the event was concluded after the closing speech by UEC Chairman.
