Rescues as good weather prompts jump in migration

Hundreds of migrants were rescued in recent days in the central Mediterranean and brought to safety in Italy. In the last five days, the NGO Sos Mediterranee has rescued 202 migrants, now on board the ship Ocean Viking waiting for a port of disembarkation.

Some survivors were suffering multiple fuel burns and exhaustion after 30 hours at sea. More than 29,000 people have died on migration journeys to Europe since 2014, with 5,000 perishing in the last two years, according to the International Organization for Migration.
