Rescuers finish drilling vertical shaft parellel to well where toddler is trapped

22 January 2019

Miners completed drilling a shaft parallel to a deep well where a two-year-old toddler has been trapped since January 13, Angel Vidal, the head engineer of the search and rescue mission, said on Monday evening. Miners had been drilling day and night to create a parallel shaft. Vidal said he expected drilling on the horizontal shaft, which should allow them to reach the boy, to begin at mid-day on Tuesday.

Despite the difficult terrain which has delayed the mission, Vidal said he was satisfied with the job. The toddler, Julen, fell down the shaft while his family walked through a private estate in Totalan, Malaga. There have been no signs of life.
