Reconstruction of Shuri Castle

In Okinawa Prefecture, work has begun to tile the roof of Shuri Castle's main hall, which was destroyed by fire in October 2019 and is now under reconstruction.

The site is protected by scaffolding and a temporary roof. After completing the main hall's frame in December, preparations for roofing began, including a safety prayer ceremony in late May. Craftsmen are now laying tiles made from recycled mudstone and red clay, aiming to finish the roof with 60,000 tiles by year's end. The entire main hall reconstruction is scheduled for completion by autumn 2026.
