Prolonged drought is hanging heavy over Argentina’s agricultural heartland with experts predicting historic low crops of the country’s all-important cash crop. The soy crop forecast was slashed to 27.5 million tons, one of the smallest harvests in recent history, according to the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange.

The drought, which has lasted for three years due to the La Niña weather phenomenon, has intensified this year with a summer with record-setting high temperatures.Endless fields of dry soybean plants and corn dot the landscape of the richest farmland in Buenos Aires and Santa Fe provinces, a scene farmers had never seen. With almost all the crops lost, the farm is struggling to pay its bills.
