The Ministry of Health issued a public notification on Thursday regarding the surge in COVID-19 cases, specifically the JN.1 Omicron variant, in the region and neighboring countries during December 2023. Myanmar has also reported an increase in COVID-19 cases, including infections with the JN.1 variant.

To curb the spread of respiratory diseases, including COVID-19, the public is strongly advised to wear masks in crowded areas, places with poor ventilation, while using public transportation, and when visiting hospitals, health departments, and homes for the aged. Additionally, the mandate to wear masks extends to individuals at higher risk of severity and mortality, as well as those exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 or respiratory diseases.

Since vaccination significantly reduces the severity and mortality rates, the Ministry encourages older individuals, those with chronic diseases, and those with lower stamina to receive COVID-19 booster shots. The public is advised to avoid crowded areas and confined spaces if experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or respiratory diseases. Instead, individuals are urged to promptly seek treatment by visiting the nearest health department.
