According to the Myanmar Sugar and Sugarcane Related Products Association (MSSRPA), Vietnam has offered to purchase 10,000 tons of sugar in the upcoming 2023 - 2024 sugarcane season.

At present, our association is mainly focusing on ensuring self-sufficiency as priority and only the surplus sugar is being delivered to foreign countries.

Currently, around 70,000 to 90,000 tons of sugar are being exported to Vietnam, and more foreign investors are invited to contribute for the establishment of new sugar mills in local. In addition, Bangladesh is making offers to purchase Myanmar’s sugar.

Vice Chairman, MSSRPA, Win Htay, said " In Myanmar, sugarcane season usually starts in December and Myanmar’s sugar could ship to foreign countries in the new 2023 - 2024 upcoming season. Although sugarcane is usually sold in advance in November, the price of sugarcane has not yet been estimated."

The sugarcane is usually grown in December and January and it can be harvested between November and February. And, it is commonly cultivated in the upper Sagaing Region, northern Shan State, western and eastern Bago Region, Yangon and Mandalay Region.

Vice Chairman, MSSRPA, Win Htay, said " At present, around 70,000 tons of sugar have been exported to Vietnam beyond self-sufficiency. Even though the market potentiality is in good condition and it still needs to boost sugar production. Only if we try to develop the sugar industry more than now, we will be able to export more and increase foreign income."

The MSSRPA is focusing more on boosting exports to foreign countries, as well as inviting new investors to establish new sugar mills.
