Prison Inspection: MNHRC inspects the Mandalay Central Prison

On February 19 and 20, the inspection team, led by Chairperson U Paw Lwin Sein of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) conducted an inspection of the Mandalay Central Prison in Aung Myay Thar San Township, Mandalay Region, in accordance with Section 43 and 44 of the Commission Law.

The inspection team inspected to various facilities within the prison while privately interviewing the prisoners. The inspection team inquired and checked whether the prisoners were afforded their fundamental rights, whether they had received items issued by the prison and items sent by their families, and whether they were permitted family visits.

Additionally, the team evaluated the conditions of physical activities, right to freedom of religion, access to educational and vocational training, and whether there were instances of human rights violations and torture by prison officials and fellow prisoners.

The MNHRC also donated knowledgeable books for the benefit of the prisoners. The inspection team will send its findings and recommendations to the relevant department in accordance with the MNHRC law for necessary actions.
