South Korean prosecutors have named President Yoon Suk Yeol a suspect in an investigation regarding his declaration of martial law on December 3.

The special investigation team, led by prosecutor Park Se-hyun, is examining charges of abuse of power and insurrection, as the two are considered interconnected.

While the president has immunity from criminal prosecution, this does not apply in the case of insurrection. Justice Minister Park Sung-jae is also being investigated for his involvement in a Cabinet meeting held prior to the martial law declaration.

The investigation is overseen by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, ensuring independence from the Justice Ministry.
