Peru's President Pedro Castillo gave a speech to the nation late on after public prosecutors and police officers entered the country's Presidential Palace to detain his sister-in-law, who is under investigation for allegedly forming part of an asset-laundering criminal group.
Authorities also ordered the arrest of other members of the alleged network, including the Mayor of the rural district of Anguía, where Castillo and his family lived before moving into the Presidential Palace. In his televised address, Castillo said "it is evident the conspiracy between a part of the Congress, the Attorney General's Office and a sector of the media, to destabilize the democratic order." Earlier, Castillo refused to comment on the investigation into his sister-in-law before an order for her arrest was issued.
