Preparation for Election: UEC meets with registered political parties

The Union Election Commission (UEC) held a meeting with registered political parties at its office on Saturday. During the meeting, UEC Chairman U Ko Ko outlined preparations for the upcoming election.

He stressed that the Commission has widely verified for political party establishment and registration in compliance with the law. To date, 67 parties have applied: 51 have been approved, although 2 subsequently canceled their registration, resulting in 49 active parties.

Among these, 9 parties will operate on nationwide scale, while 40 will focus on regional or state levels. The Chairman urged all registered parties to diligently meet the membership requirements and establish party offices as specified in Section-5(f) and (h) of the Political Parties Registration Law.

He emphasized that the Commission must oversee parties according to the law and bylaw and fulfill their needs within the legal framework, exhorting political parties to become strong and trustworthy for voters.The UEC Chairman also explained government’s efforts to ensure accurate voter lists and the use of Myanmar’s electronic voting machines in the upcoming election.

Following the discussion, the UEC official reported on preparations for the upcoming multiparty democratic general election. The chairman then clarified the presentations from the attendees and concluded the ceremony with his closing speech.
