Powerful quake rocks Turkey and Syria, kills more than 1,900

A building collapsed in Diyarbakir, Turkey on Monday as rescuers nearby were searching for survivors after strong earthquake on early Monday. The earthquake toppled hundreds of buildings and killed more than 1,900 people in both Turkey and Syria.Hundreds were still believed to be trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers searched mounds of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.

Thousands of buildings were reported collapsed in a wide area extending from Syria’s cities of Aleppo and Hama to Turkey’s Diyarbakir, more than 330 kilometers to the northeast. A hospital in Turkey collapsed, and patients, including newborns, were evacuated from facilities in Syria.Turkey’s disaster management agency has reported that a new earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred close to the epicenter of Monday’s previous deadly quake, which also generated dozens of aftershocks.
