Pope Leo XIV visits Assisi for the first time since election as pontiff

Pope Leo XIV visited Assisi for the first time since his election in May 2025. Arriving by helicopter from Vatican City, he attended the CEI (Italian Episcopal Conference) assembly at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, meeting privately with the bishops. Before the gathering, he prays at the tomb of St. Francis in the lower basilica’s crypt. He then continues on to Montefalco to celebrate Mass at the Augustinian nuns’ monastery.
