U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Vietnam's top leaders in Hanoi on Monday (July 9). The visit is as part of his multi-country tour following visits to North Korea and Japan. Pompeo held talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, before meeting with Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh. The delegates discussed measures to strengthen strategic partnership, as well as regional issues, including North Korea's denuclearisation. Pompeo said that in the past two decades, U.S. bilateral trade with Vietnam had grown 8,000 percent, and American companies had poured in billions of dollars in investments. This is Pompeo's first visit to Vietnam since assuming the position of Secretary of State in April.
