Police seize over 6 tons of shark fins in Peru

Peruvian police seized "more than 6 tons of shark fins" in Callao, Lima, a highly sought-after ingredient for soups and aphrodisiac concoctions, which were to be illegally exported to Asia, according to the National Criminal Investigation Directorate.

Previous large seizures, such as 1.3 tonnes in September 2024, highlight the country's role in the illegal shark fin trade, which is driven by demand in Asia and contributes to the decline of shark populations.
