Pilgrimage to Bagan’s Temple: Over 170,000 pilgrims visit Shwezigon Pagoda in 2021

The pagodas and temples in the Bagan Archaeological Zone, Nyaung-U district of Mandalay Region have been closed temporarily because of COVID-19 pandemic and they have been reopened in February 2021 in line with COVID-19 guidelines.

Over 170,000 visitors paid a pilgrimage to Shwezigon Pagoda in Bagan in 2021 according to the Deputy Director U Myint Than, the Bagan branch of the Department of Archaeology and National Museum. According the records, over 3000 pilgrims visited in February 2021, over 4000 in March, over 2,600 in April and so on.

The number of visitors to Bagan has increased monthly except in the rainy season. Currently, the pagodas are opened at 6 am to 6 pm daily. The COVID-19 prevention and control measures are being conducted in Bagan Archaeological Zone in line with the health guidelines for the safety of the visitors.
