Detectives entered Peru's Presidential Palace on Friday as they investigated an alleged corruption case that led to the resignation of the president's secretary-general and the defence minister. President Pedro Castillo's Secretary-General, Bruno Pachecho, said he was resigning from his position with the "conviction".
He labelled the investigation a "smear campaign" against the president. The country's Defence Minister, Walter Ayala, also resigned from his post on Sunday amid the investigation. The investigation was launched after retired army chief Jose Vizcarra accused Pacheco and Ayala of pressuring him in promoting two military officers. During a meeting with Mayors on Thursday, Castillo denied the allegations of corruption and said if there were any "problems in our entourage, it will be up to us to correct them."
