Peru declares state of emergency in Lima over gang extortion

The government of Peru announced a state of emergency over cases of extortion in 12 districts of Lima and neighboring Callao, and on the same day bus companies held a strike over the issue, halting the service of thousands of buses in the capital.

Under this figure, the Armed Forces was empowered to support the police against the gangs that have been extorting public transportation, as explained by Defense Minister at a press conference.
