Finland has begun to introduce "Digital Travel Credentials" or DTC for air passengers, an alternative to traditional passport checks.

The project -- aiming to speed up and offer more security to checks started in late August and is currently only available from Helsinki airport to certain test destinations in the UK.

Mikko Väisänen, Inspector, Finnish Border Guard said  "The passenger just arrives there, looks at the camera, we make the facial comparison and matching and if that's done, then we just check the information for the chip, that it has been written for this particular passport. It's it's not cloned or anything and that's it and it's really fast compared to other checks."

The decision of Finland to test digital travel documents follows the wish of the EU Commission for the pilot project to be carried out by some member states.
