Despite cancelled firework displays and tightened restrictions, some in Paris said Thursday that they don't expect the rapidly spreading omicron COVID-19 variant to impact their New Year's Eve celebrations.

Paris local authorities have cancelled fireworks display on the Champs-Elysees on New Year's Eve and called on people to avoid large gatherings but didn't impose a curfew.

More health measures are on the horizon, with residents and tourists in Paris mandated to wear masks outdoors from Friday. Those who do not comply will face a fine of 135 Euros.
