More protests were held in Paris on Saturday by demonstrators angered by a plan to raise the country's retirement age from 62 to 64. Youth organizations and left-wing party La France insoumise called on residents to protest against the proposal. French President Emmanuel Macron insisted he would press ahead with the pension reforms which he says are needed to keep the pension system financially viable.

Unions and protesters have claimed it threatens hard-fought worker rights. On Thursday, about 1.1 million people protested across the country against the proposal. France is a country with an ageing population and growing life expectancy. Everyone there receives a state pension.
