Madison Cawthorn, a 25-year-old Republican who is a candidate for a U.S. House seat from North Carolina, spoke to the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night. Cawthorn called for liberals to listen to other ideas and for conservatives to define what they believe in. Cawthorn also referred to civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who spoke about his dream of people being judged by the content of their character, not the color of their skin. He said millions of people who try to come to the United States share this dream. Cawthorn, who was badly injured in a car accident when he was 18, is paralyzed from the waist down and uses a wheelchair. He stood at the end of his address, which paraphrased the U.S. pledge of allegiance.
