





A panel discussion under the theme "Ensuring a Better Life and Future: Providing Adequate Food and Water for All," was held at the Assembly Hall of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation in Nay Pyi Taw on October 15th, ahead of the 2024 World Food Day, which will take place on October 16th and the event was held with Union Minister U Min Naung attending and delivering the opening remarks.
During the panel discussion, experts from various relevant sectors discussed the current global state of food security, nutrition, and the availability of sufficient food for all. They also addressed the status of Myanmar’s production and sufficiency in major crops such as rice, beans and pulses, oil crops, and vegetables, as well as the livestock sector's production, consumption, and security.
Discussions also covered food safety, nutritional adequacy, and the necessity of transforming the agricultural and food systems (Agri-food System Transformation) to meet these needs.
The challenges and obstacles faced in the agriculture and livestock sectors during these efforts were also explored. In attendance at the discussion were Union Minister, Deputy Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Director Generals, Rectors of the Universities departmental officials.
In the afternoon, Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, U Min Naung, met with Ms. Sara Austin Netzer, the Director and Representative of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Myanmar, at the reception hall of the Union Minister's office.
During the meeting, they held open and cordial discussions about the collaborations between the Ministry and the Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT), funded by UNOPS, focusing on livelihood development and food security, as well as ongoing and future development initiatives in the agriculture and livestock sectors.
