Over 1,300 pilgrims died during Hajj

Saudi Arabia said Sunday that more than 1,300 faithful died during the hajj pilgrimage which took place during intense heat, and that most of the deceased did not have official permits.

Some 1.8 million pilgrims took part in this year's hajj that was held from June 14 through Wednesday of last week amid soaring temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius. Saudi health minister said in a telephone interview by a local television on Sunday that 1,301 pilgrims had died from heatstroke and other causes.
