Over 1,000 French firefighters battle major blaze

Over 1,000 firefighters struggled to contain a major wildfire that has burned a large area of pine forest in southwestern France, as several European countries sent aircraft and other support to help assist in the region already ravaged by flames last month.

Local authorities said more 7,400 hectares burned since Tuesday in the Gironde and neighboring Landes region as France, like other European countries. Wildfires in France have already forced the evacuation of about 10,000 people and destroyed at least 16 houses.
