Ornamental Fish Farming: A promising business in local

Ornamental fish breeding is now popular not only in local but also in abroad. It has become a promising business in local.

People breed ornamental fish as a hobby but also as a business and the ornamental fish are being bred on a manageable as well as in a lake. In local, the market expands more in Yangon and Mandalay and there are more than 100 acres of earthen lakes of ornamental fish farming averagely.

Ko Fatti, Aquarium Farm Myanmar said “We buy fingerling and breed. The adult fish can be sold after a month or 45 days. Currently, the golden fish and fighter fish are good demand in the market. The price depends on the quality and sizes.”

The price of ornamental fish is varied depending on its species, sizes, colours, shapes and patterns. The breeder from Aquarium Farm Myanmar said that the challenge of this business is the illegal import of ornamental fish through the borders and it affects the local breeders.

Ko Fatti, Aquarium Farm Myanmar said “If we can control the illegal import of ornamental fish through the border gates, the domestic ornamental fish market will have good prospect. We have experts but we need fish species. I think it needs just to import the necessary fish species that are not in local market.”

In the past, the ornamental fish are breed as hobby and fun. The breeder said that the ornamental fish business does not halt during COVID-19 period. Now, this business is a good prospect because many people do it and it can create job opportunities.
