A pod of orca whales swam in the waters off Seattle Thursday, including a large male. The pod, identified by whale watchers as transient whales, swam for at least an hour in Elliott Bay.

The Seattle region is home to two kinds of orca whales. The group called transients feed on marine mammals while another group called residents feed on salmon.
