Some Ugandans welcomed in the New Year with optimism despite an increase in coronavirus cases in the country, spurred by the new omicron variant. The Ugandan police banned public celebrations and the traditional fireworks that have characterized the New Year's festivities across the nation.

However, some revelers who managed to sneak out, spoke to the Media about their dreams for the new year, with many saying lockdowns should be lifted and Ugandans allowed to take care of themselves. A nighttime curfew remains in force across the country.
