The onion market is now taking a lead in townships due to foreign buyers. In Myanmar, onion is mainly cultivated in Mandalay, Magway and Sagaing regions. Currently, due to the successful cultivation of onion, nearly 20 truckloads of onion regularly enter the Bayint Naung commodity depot.

The onion entering the Bayint Naung commodity depot is mainly from Myingyan, Taungtha, Seikphyu and Pakokku townships. Chairman of the Myanmar Onion, Garlic and Culinary Crop Producers and Exporters Association (MOGCCPEA) explained the current onion market condition.

Chairman,  MOGCCPEA, Khin Han, said "After Thingyan period, the supply of onions has increased. Now, nearly 20 truckloads of onion enter the Bayint Naung commodity depot. It’s less and prices have risen. If the price is less than 400 Kyats for 10 tical, sellers won’t have profit."

Aung Kaung Si commodity depot, Khin Khin San, said "Now, after the Thingyan period, onion enters the market regularly and the prices are up - prices of garlic rise a little too. China and Bangladesh buy onions from the townships. So, prices are up in townships and Yangon has to increase prices."

Every day, nearly 200,000 visses of onion and 50,000 visses of garlic are being sold at the Bayint Naung commodity depot.
