Okinawa’s early cherry blossom festival is drawing visitors to a mountain in the southern part of Japan, ahead of other regions. About 7,000 hikanzakura cherry trees line a 4-kilometer stretch from Mount Yaedake’s base to its 450-meter summit in Motobu town.
The blossoms, which began to bloom in late December, have attracted both locals and holidaymakers, who are taking in the sight and capturing photos. A visitor from Fukuoka Prefecture expressed surprise at seeing cherry blossoms in January, noting the tropical atmosphere of Okinawa’s blooms. The festival runs until February 2.
