Bago Region Chief Minister U Myo Swe Win and many other officials participated in a ceremony to offer 10,000 oil lamps to the Lord Buddha at the Shwemawdaw Pagoda in Bago Township in the evening of the Thadingyut Full Moon Day.
It’s reported that the historic pagodas including Shwetharlyaung, Kyaikpon Laymyethnar, Shwegulay and Shwegugyi were crowded with pilgrims on the Thadingyut Full Moon Day. The Thadingyut Festival also known as the Lighting Festival is held on the full moon day of the month of Thadingyut.
As a custom, it is held at the end of the Buddhist sabbath and is the second most popular festival after the Thingyan Festival. Thadingyut festival is the celebration to welcome the Lord Buddha’s descent from the heaven after he preached the Abhidhamma to his mother, Maya, who was reborn in the heaven.
