Spurred by a rash of recent e-bike battery fires, New York City Council is now looking into a variety of new legislation aimed at preventing the fires caused by the charging of the e-bike lithium batteries.

TomCurrao, FDNY Chief of Counterterrorism and Emergency Preparedness said "As of today, we've experienced as many injuries, deaths and overall fires involving lithium ion batteries as we have for the previous three years combined."

A fire caused by an e-bike in a Manhattan apartment building injured over three dozen people last week and has brought the issue to the forefront. The proposed legislation is aimed at both educating e-bike users of the dangers of faulty batteries, as well as looking at ways to make sure the batteries being used are safe.
