2nd Meeting of the National Nutrition Promotion Steering Committee and Nutrition Sector Coordinating Group was held in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.
Myanmar has set out to guide and support the development and roll-out of the national action plan on nutrition to sub-national level in 2019-2020.
Studies show that Myanmar suffers from a high prevalence of maternal and child under-nutrition. Stunting or chronic under-nutrition has declined from 35.1% in 2009-2010 to 26.7% in 2017-2018. At the same time, wasting or acute under-nutrition remains high, affecting 6.7% of preschool children.
Deputy Director, National Nutrition Centre, Dr. Lwin Mar Hlaing said “In tackling the nutrition promotion issue in Myanmar, we, the Ministry of Health and Sports cannot handle alone. It needs to implement for development of education sector, promotion of agriculture, livestock and fishery sectors as well as better social protection system.”
It is learnt that as the determinants and causes of malnutrition are diverse, addressing malnutrition requires action and investment, across multiple sectors, including health, agriculture, social welfare and education.
Director-General, Livestock Breeding and Veterinary Department, Dr. Ye Tun Win said “Our main tasks are to implement for food security, food sufficiency and rural development. Base on these tasks, we are also implementing for nutrition promotion. We initiated school milk program in 2013, aiming for sufficiency of milk and dairy products in the country.”
The meeting discussed the progress and achievements during the Multi-sectoral National Plan of Action on Nutrition (MS-NPAN) in the first and second year of implementation.
