QR codes replace cash registers at Japanese supermarket branch Yokohama and it is being launched on Friday. The new system is in a section of a branch of Aeon Food Style in the supermarket.
Customers need to download a smart phone app. With QR codes, payment takes place automatically through a credit card registered with the app when the shopper leaves the store with their items. Thirty-five cameras in the ceiling and weight sensors embedded in the store's shelves identify the products being sold.
The system can determine that items are not sold when customers pick them up and put them back on the shelf. About 400 products are on offer. Many are boxed meals and beverages. The operator says it will consider the future development of the section by carefully monitoring customers.
