Nigerian police warn organizers after deadly stampedes

Nigeria Police Force hold a press conference, after several people are reported killed and others injured during food distribution events in Abuja and Okija.

The stampede occurred outside the Maitama Holy Trinity Catholic Church, where a food distribution drive for "vulnerable and elderly people" was underway, police said.

The chaotic crowds in Okija also occurred during a community centre food distribution drive that was handing out rice according to an official with the National Emergency Management Agency in the south.

Spokesperson told reporters that anyone organizing such events must ensure the involvement of security agencies, adding that any negligence on their part is criminal and will not be overlooked.
