Nicaraguans denouce Ortega in Costa Rica Protests

21 January 2019

Hundreds of Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica took to the streets of capital San Jose on Sunday  in a demonstration against the government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega. Protests raged for months before a government clampdown reined them in, but more than 300 people were killed during that time and over 500 incarcerated, according to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights.

The demonstrators donned Nicaragua's blue and white colors, waved flags and denounced Ortega as a dictator as they vowed for his removal from power this year. While denouncing the government, the demonstration remained peaceful and at times had a festive air with music and typical foods served.
